Best TV Shows of All Time. Sex and the City.
Carrie Bradshaw gets a bad rap for being a selfish friend and a cheating partner, but in the world of TV characters, she’s nothing short of iconic. Along with Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, she made up a foursome of women who talked sex on television in a way that was refreshingly frank and totally unprecedented. Butt stuff included. Getty. 2. My So- Called Life. Claire Danes proved herself a preternaturally talented actress as 1. Angela Chase, the high- schooler at the heart of this exceptionally well- written Winnie Holzman drama. It ran for just one season (1. TV history. Shout- out to every woman who fell in love with Jordan Catalano. May you forever take your coffee black with three or four sugars.
Roseanne What the Conners lacked in money they made up for in loyalty, love, wit, and sarcasm (*insert Darlene’s eye- roll here*). Whatever you make of Roseanne Barr’s real- life politics, you can’t deny that she made one hell of a TV show. Grey’s Anatomy. It’s the series that brought you Cristina Yang, Meredith Grey, a Post- it wedding, dancing it out, and the concept of having a Person. Most important, it’s the show that brought you Shonda Rhimes, and TV is better for it.

The show is never easy to watch — in fact, it guts you. But somehow, by the end of the series, even those viewers who are most terrified of death might find themselves at peace with its inevitability. Beverly Hills, 9. Before Gossip Girl introduced you to the rich teens of the Upper East Side, 9.
Beverly Hills. There were nose jobs, convertibles, love triangles, affairs — and in between it all, some seriously cheesy and totally unforgettable life lessons. Think: Very Special Episode meets Very Rich Teens. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below.
Black- ish. Since premiering on ABC in September 2. Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and their TV family have invited viewers into their home each week as the Johnsons explore what it’s really like to be an African- American family in upper- middle- class Encino, California. The show has earned high praise from critics, multiple NAACP Image Awards, and a possible spin- off for the show’s college- bound daughter Zoey (played by Yara Shahidi). The tentative title for the spin- off is College- ish.
How perfect is that? Getty. 8. The Sopranos. What set David Chase’s crime drama apart from other shows in the genre was the conflicted character at the heart of it, Tony Soprano.
You weren’t just watching him run a crime organization, you were watching him grapple with the psychological ramifications of his job. As has been stated many times before, The Sopranos ushered in TV’s age of the antihero. For that (and for Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano) fans are forever grateful.

Twenty- plus years later, and young people are still watching Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey hang out at Central Perk. Thanks, Netflix. Getty.
Mad Men. Is Don Draper a bad man? One of the many wonders of Mad Men is that you can find yourself grappling with this question despite the fact that its protagonist, another great antihero of our time, is dismissive, unfaithful, and often too drunk to treat anyone in his life with respect. What is it about him that makes him a sympathetic character nonetheless?
His brains? His instincts? The fact that he’s a self- made man? Anyway, enough about Don: Joan, Peggy, and Betty are TV goddesses — no questions asked. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below.

Game of Thrones. HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s daunting A Song of Ice and Fire series took something that could have put off a lot of people — dragons, magic, ice zombies, and a little bit of incest — and turned it into a juggernaut so popular that now everyone wants a piece of the high- fantasy pie. The dragon stuff is cool, obviously, but the show would be nothing without the incredible cast and their ability to illustrate complicated power struggles with clarity and humor. High- school chemistry teacher Walter White turns to the meth business when he needs extra money to pay for his cancer treatments and a whole lot of drama ensues. Fair warning if you try to binge this: You will not be able to leave your house for days. Orange Is the New Black. No one could have predicted that this Netflix smash hit would become the phenomenon that it has; after all, “women’s prison” doesn’t exactly scream “comedy.” The show has taken a turn more toward the dramatic in recent years but its greatest strengths — a diverse cast, sharp writing, and a dizzying variety of stories — remain intact. Will & Grace In addition to being absolutely hilarious, Will & Grace helped usher in an era where LGBTQ characters were not only included on television but put front and center. The show wasn’t perfect (and neither is LGBTQ inclusion in Hollywood now), but at the very least, it put a dent in the door. Getty. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below.

The conspiracy never made sense and probably never will, but The X- Files remains the gold standard for shows about FBI agents investigating the paranormal while also flirting a lot. Name a more iconic duo than Mulder and Scully. I’ll wait. 1. 7. The Simpsons People like to say The Simpsons isn’t funny anymore but most of those people have probably never managed to keep a cartoon sitcom on the air for 2. Animated or not, the Simpsons are still one of the funniest, most relatable families on TV (even if they are absolutely terrible at disciplining their children). The Wire. Extremely annoying men still refer to The Wire as being more like a novel than a show, and while you should never date those men, you should maybe listen to them just this once and watch it. Alternatively, listen to Barack Obama — he’s such a superfan that he once took time out of his busy presidential schedule to interview creator David Simon.
HBOAdvertisement - Continue Reading Below. Lost. Even diehards have to admit that the saga of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 8. Lost was a thrilling, unpredictable mystery that blended science fiction with metaphysics and plain old human emotion. Also, for the last time — it was not all a dream. Twin Peaks. If you’ve ever enjoyed a TV show that includes plot twists, cliffhangers, complicated mythologies, and intense weekly theorizing, then you can send a thank- you note to David Lynch, who anticipated the rise of TV as something highbrow about 2. Twin Peaks wasn’t always flawless (and still isn’t, if you count The Return), but there’s no question that its characters and settings made an indelible mark on pop culture. The Golden Girls.
Sophia, Rose, Blanche, and Dorothy, four retirees sharing a house in Miami, were the original squad — no arguments. When they weren’t eating cheesecake, they were busy supporting each other through heartbreak, loss, and more, and doing it with humor that people of all ages can appreciate.
Chappelle’s Show.
